Punjab Public Transport Fares to be Reduced Massively

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif on Sunday directed authorities to immediately reduce transport fares following a significant cut in diesel prices, calling the move a “fundamental right” of the people.

The federal government on Friday reduced the price of high-speed diesel (HSD) by Rs 12.84 per litre, bringing it down to Rs 272.99. The drop is expected to impact the broader transport sector, including heavy vehicles, trains, and agricultural machinery, which depend heavily on HSD.

Maryam Nawaz emphasised that any delay or refusal by transporters to reflect the price change in their fares would not be tolerated. She ordered that updated fare lists be displayed at transport terminals to ensure transparency and public awareness.

The chief minister instructed district administrations and the provincial transport department to enforce the revised fare rates strictly. She warned of action against transporters failing to comply with the updated pricing.

While the diesel price was reduced, the federal government also slashed the price of kerosene oil by Rs. 7.19 to Rs. 178.27 per litre and light diesel oil by Rs. 8.20 to Rs. 162.37 per litre. However, the petrol price remained unchanged at Rs. 264.61 per litre.
