The US government has immediately suspended the issuance of visas for foreign commercial truck drivers.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that foreign drivers not only threaten the employment opportunities of American truckers but also pose safety risks on the roads.
“We are stopping the issuance of visas for commercial truck drivers with immediate effect,” Rubio said, adding that the rising number of foreign drivers is undermining the livelihoods of American workers.
The decision comes at a time when calls to protect local jobs in the country’s transport and logistics sector are gaining momentum.
According to the government, the move has been taken in the interest of American citizens and to ensure greater safety on the nation’s highways.
