The Islamabad Electric Supply Company (Iesco) has announced that electricity theft has been virtually eliminated in areas of Rawalpindi city and Cantt circle where one million Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) meters have been installed.
The modern AMI meters are designed to automatically detect tampering, theft attempts, and technical disturbances, immediately alerting the central AMI Operation Centre. This smart system also balances load distribution, which reduces transformer overload, meter burnouts, and frequent tripping.
Over the past month, several theft and tampering cases were flagged by the system, enabling quick raids by field teams. Offenders were caught, their meters removed, detection bills issued, and requests for FIRs submitted against them.
Iesco CEO, Engineer Ch. Khalid Mahmood, described the rollout of AMI meters as a “revolutionary step” for Pakistan’s power sector. He said the new technology not only prevents theft but also ensures transparent billing, builds public trust, and enhances distribution efficiency.
“If anyone tries to manipulate or tamper with the AMI system, our control room immediately detects it, and action is taken without delay,” he stressed.
Mahmood also praised Chief Engineer Development Ch. Kamran Aftab, Project Director AMI Mohsin Raza Gillani, and the entire AMI team for successfully completing the massive installation project across Rawalpindi city and cantonment areas.
He added that AMI technology will be crucial in reducing line losses, supporting the government’s anti-theft drive, and delivering uninterrupted power supply to consumers.
With the automated system, consumers now receive timely and accurate meter readings and have the ability to monitor their electricity usage and expected bills around the clock.
