PSB Pushes PHF for Transparency on Pro League Preparations

Pakistan hockey’s return to the Pro League has not been enough to mend fences between the Pakistan Sports Board (PSB) and the Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF), with the government body demanding oversight of all financial matters.

The PHF and PSB have been locked in a contentious dialogue over the federation’s spending habits, which they blame for the sport’s decline in the country. To avoid such issues in the future, the PHF has been directed to submit a comprehensive plan for the FIH Pro League within three days before Rs250 million in funds are released.

In its letter, the PSB asked the PHF to outline all aspects of the campaign, including travel arrangements, training schedules, logistics, and administrative details. The directive follows the PHF’s request for Rs350 million in total, after which the government capped its assistance at Rs250 million and instructed the federation to bridge the remaining gap through sponsorships and private funding.

Pakistan, who received an invitation to Season 7 of the FIH Pro League following New Zealand’s withdrawal due to financial constraints, now face the daunting challenge of competing against the world’s best while also dealing with a financial crunch. The lineup includes hockey giants such as Argentina, Australia, Belgium, England, Germany, India, the Netherlands, and Spain, which makes PHF’s task even tougher.

For Pakistan hockey, the Pro League is both an opportunity and a test—a chance to reassert relevance on the international stage while financial and organizational hurdles still loom.

All eyes are now on the PHF and whether it complies with the sports board’s directive. A harmonious solution would be the best thing to happen to Pakistan hockey in years.
