Mayor Karachi Announces Electric Bikes for Govt Employees

Mayor Murtaza Wahab has announced that the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) will establish electric bike charging stations across the city, introducing an eco-friendly step toward sustainable urban transport.

Speaking to reporters, Wahab said a private company has partnered with KMC to help implement the project, which will provide employees with electric bikes while reducing fuel expenses and carbon emissions.

In the first phase, KMC has acquired 20 electric bikes. While the market rate for each unit stands at around Rs. 240,000, the corporation purchased them for Rs. 215,000 under a negotiated agreement. The mayor said the first batch will be handed over to dispatch riders, while women employees will be prioritized in the next phase.

To support the initiative, KMC has already installed its first charging station at the corporation’s headquarters. More stations are planned throughout Karachi, all of which will be tracked through a mobile app to maintain transparency and efficiency.
