Punjab Governor Saleem Haider Khan has pledged to take responsibility for the weddings of nine girls whose dowries were swept away in the recent floods.
The assurance came after reports of the incident spread on social media, prompting the Governor to visit Mohanlal, where he met the affected families and local residents. During his visit, flood victims showed him their submerged houses and shared details of their losses.
Speaking on the occasion, Governor Saleem Haider Khan expressed deep sorrow over the devastation caused by torrential rains and flooding across Punjab. “Homes have been destroyed, belongings washed away, and people are forced to seek shelter in graveyards. Seeing this suffering, I have lost sleep,” he said.
The Governor announced that three meals a day would be provided to flood-hit families and that the Red Crescent would establish medical camps in the area. He also directed that tents be set up for displaced residents in Mohanlal.
He stressed that this was a time for collective humanitarian action, not politics. “We must rise above political differences and focus on helping those in need,” he added.
During the visit, victims complained that no government support had reached them so far. They said they had received no food, medical aid, or tents and had been forced to fend for themselves in the aftermath of the disaster.
