The National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA) has been ordered to launch a full-scale probe after a massive trove of leaked personal data was found online. This data included private details of government officials, federal ministers, and thousands of ordinary citizens.
The leaked data, which was discovered on Sunday, includes mobile SIM ownership details, images of CNICs, call logs, identity documents, and even international travel histories. Shockingly, this information is being openly traded online, sometimes for as little as Rs. 500. Further, this data is sometimes even easily accessible on websites found through an easy Google search.
Federal Minister for Interior Mohsin Naqvi took notice of this breach of personal data and directed the NCCIA to take action on Sunday. A special 14-member team has been assigned to probe the breach. A spokesperson from the Ministry of Interior revealed that the team has already begun its work and is expected to share its findings within 14 days. This team has also been directed to identify those responsible for the breach and take swift legal action.
The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) previously announced it had blocked these websites, but the unlawful trade in personal information continues without any signs of stopping. According to the reports, numerous online platforms keep selling sensitive data, which puts people at risk of being harassed, blackmailed, and targeted by criminals.
Security specialists have called this situation a complete breakdown of the system. They caution that this security breach might create serious consequences for the country’s safety and damage how much citizens trust government agencies.
