RUDA to Build 46 Km Flood Barriers on Ravi

The Ravi Urban Development Authority (RUDA) has announced plans to construct 46 kilometers of embankments on both sides of the River Ravi within the next three years.

Rao Intizar Ali, Project In-Charge for River Training Works, shared the details during a media briefing on Monday. He said that earlier, embankments built over a 7-kilometer stretch had protected several villages in Sapphire Bay from floodwaters.

He added that following the recent floods, Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz directed RUDA to accelerate the construction work. “We have decided to complete 30-foot embankments on both sides of the 46-kilometer stretch within three years. The riverbed itself will span one kilometer,” he explained, adding that the Punjab government will assist in clearing encroachments along the river to ensure progress.

Responding to questions, Rao Intizar said delays in the project were mainly due to land acquisition issues. However, with the chief minister instructing all departments to coordinate with RUDA, he expressed confidence that the project will now move ahead quickly.

“We are optimistic that the embankments will be completed within the given timeline, ensuring long-term protection of Lahore’s surrounding areas from flooding,” he concluded.
