Usman Shinwari Calls Time on International Career

Left-arm pacer Usman Khan Shinwari has brought down the curtain on his international career, officially announcing his retirement from all formats of Pakistan cricket.

The 31-year-old, who first burst onto the scene in 2013, represented Pakistan in 34 matches across all three formats and earned a reputation as a lively new-ball bowler capable of swinging it both ways at a decent pace.

Usman’s debut came in December 2013 when he donned the green shirt against Sri Lanka in a T20I. Over the following years, he expanded his international résumé with an ODI cap and, eventually, his solitary Test appearance, also against Sri Lanka, in 2017 and 2019, respectively.

Though his red-ball journey was limited to just one Test, Shinwari’s biggest impact came in white-ball cricket. He was part of Pakistan’s squad at the 2018 Asia Cup and produced some standout spells in ODIs, most notably two memorable five-wicket hauls against Sri Lanka. The first, a destructive 5-34 in Sharjah in 2017, announced him as a serious threat, while a 5-51 in Karachi in 2019 further underlined his ability to dismantle batting line-ups.

Across his 17 ODIs, Shinwari claimed 34 wickets, averaging exactly two scalps per outing. In T20Is, he featured 16 times for Pakistan, adding 13 wickets to his tally.

Beyond international cricket, Usman Khan Shinwari also featured in franchise cricket across the globe, most notably making appearances in the Big Bash League and the Lanka Premier League.

While injuries and competition for places curtailed what could have been a longer international career, Usman Shinwari’s fiery bursts with the new ball and his knack for producing game-changing spells ensured he left a mark. For many fans, his standout ODI performances remain a reminder of the depth and variety Pakistan has traditionally enjoyed in its fast-bowling stocks.
