Karachi Housing Societies Flooded After Dam Overflows

Heavy monsoon showers late Tuesday night triggered the overflow of Thado Dam in Gadap Town, sending floodwaters into surrounding areas and causing severe disruption along the Superhighway (M-9 Motorway).

According to officials, surging waters inundated nearby housing societies and submerged portions of the motorway near the Motorway Police office. Authorities closed both tracks as a precaution, reopening them later after partial drainage helped restore traffic flow.

Among the worst-hit localities were Saadi Town, Khameeso Jokhio Goth (Malir), Khameeso Goth (New Karachi), Sohrab Goth, Machar Colony, and Hasan Nauman Colony. Residents reported water entering their homes overnight, sparking panic. Many families fled to relatives’ homes for shelter, while others stayed back to try and protect their belongings.

Rescue efforts continued into Wednesday, with teams from Rescue 1122, the Pakistan Army, Rangers, and Navy working jointly to evacuate stranded families. More than 350 people were rescued, while welfare organisations such as Edhi and Chhipa deployed boats to transport over 200 residents and distributed food and clean drinking water to the displaced.

A Sindh government spokesperson confirmed that the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) was coordinating with rescue agencies and security forces to manage the crisis. Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah instructed officials to keep a close watch on the dam’s spillways and ensure timely alerts to safeguard lives and property.
