The Punjab Education Department has decided to roll out a School Meal Program Assessment (SMPA) in eight districts with the aim of tackling malnutrition and improving the health of primary school children.
Sources said the assessment will be carried out by September 19 in Bahawalnagar, Bhakkar, Dera Ghazi Khan, Layyah, Muzaffargarh, Mianwali, Rajanpur, and Rahim Yar Khan. As part of the exercise, a baseline survey of primary students will be conducted.
The assessment will include an educational and health profile along with a questionnaire. Accurate recording of students’ height and weight has been declared mandatory to ensure reliable data.
The Education Department has directed District Education Authorities (DEAs) to immediately start the assessment process. Alongside, schools have been instructed to provide children with milk and fortified biscuits as part of the initiative.
Officials believe the program will not only help address health challenges but also boost attendance, reduce dropouts, and support the mental development of children.
