Major Motorway Closed Due to Flood

The National Highways and Motorway Police (NHMP) announced on Friday that the Multan–Sukkur Motorway (M-5) has been shut down due to flooding, with traffic redirected to alternate routes.

According to an NHMP spokesperson, vehicles traveling from Multan to Sukkur can exit at Shah Shams Interchange, use the National Highway, and rejoin the motorway at Uch Sharif Interchange.

Those heading from Sukkur toward Multan are advised to leave the M-5 at Uch Sharif Interchange, continue on the National Highway, and re-enter at Sher Shah Interchange. Patrol officers and road guides have been deployed to assist drivers and manage diversions.

The closure comes a day after the federal government approved additional controlled breaches along the M-5 to manage floodwaters threatening Jalalpur Pirwala and the surrounding areas.

The decision was made in a meeting chaired by Federal Minister for Communications Abdul Aleem Khan, with senior officials from Punjab, the National Highway Authority (NHA), and other agencies in attendance.

Officials confirmed flood damage at five points along the motorway, which has inundated villages in Multan, Lodhran, and Bahawalpur districts. The Multan–Uch Sharif section remains closed while NHA teams work to restore traffic flow.
