The Capital Development Authority (CDA) has directed drivers of electric buses in Islamabad not to exceed the speed limit of 40 kilometers per hour in sector areas and 45 kilometers per hour on highways.
Officials said the advisory was issued after complaints of speeding led to at least three non-fatal accidents on different routes. CDA’s planning wing stressed that extra caution was necessary since the soundless electric buses are still new for the city and require careful handling to avoid mishaps.
The buses are operated by the National Radio Telecommunication Corporation (NRTC), which procured 170 electric buses last year. At present, only 120 are running on around 20 routes due to limited charging capacity.
Officials expect all 170 buses to be on the roads once depot upgrades, including the installation of new charging panels, are completed later this month.
CDA estimates that currently around 60,000 passengers travel daily by electric bus, a figure that could rise to 100,000 once the full fleet is operational.
