The United Arab Emirates has announced significant updates to its visit visa system, introducing four new visa categories and revising the conditions and durations of several existing permits.
The changes, introduced by the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security (ICP), also include new income requirements for residents who wish to sponsor visitors. Under the revised rules, a resident must earn at least Dh4,000 per month to sponsor immediate family members. Sponsorship of second- or third-degree relatives now requires a minimum monthly income of Dh8,000, while sponsoring friends requires a salary of Dh15,000. Authorities say these measures are designed to increase transparency, attract skilled professionals, and strengthen the UAE’s economic diversification efforts.
Visa Durations and Extensions
The new framework outlines six categories of visit visas, with clear provisions for duration and extensions, aimed at simplifying the application process and making visa procedures more efficient for applicants.
New Visit Visa Categories
The four new categories include permits for specialists in artificial intelligence, entertainment, event participation, and tourism through cruise ships and leisure vessels.
In addition, a humanitarian residence permit valid for one year—renewable under certain conditions—has been introduced. The reforms also allow foreign widows and divorcees to apply for residency without a sponsor, with the option to renew under defined rules.
A business exploration visa has also been introduced, which requires applicants to demonstrate financial solvency, ownership of or involvement in an overseas company, or verifiable professional practice.
Meanwhile, new regulations for truck drivers’ visas permit both single and multiple entries, provided the sponsor is a licensed transport or freight company, and requirements such as financial guarantees, fees, and health insurance are fulfilled.
Broader Objectives
Major General Suhail Saeed Al Khaili, Director General of the ICP, said the new categories and amendments are the result of extensive studies on local, regional, and global trends in residency and immigration. He emphasized that these updates reflect feedback from stakeholders, customers, and periodic reviews of existing services.
According to Al Khaili, the reforms are expected to enhance the UAE’s appeal as a global hub, support the technology and transport sectors, stimulate trade and tourism, and improve overall quality of life for residents and visitors alike.
