The Dairy Farmers Association has warned that if the government does not issue an official price notification by tomorrow, the price of milk will be increased to Rs. 300 per litre starting October 11.
The association proposed setting the milk price between Rs. 270 and Rs. 280 per litre, but said they will proceed with their own pricing if the notification is delayed any further.
Representatives of the association stated that they have previously sold milk at their own determined rates and have not raised prices for the past 15 months. They accused the commissioner of delaying the matter for the last three months.
A few days earlier, Sindh government spokesperson Sadia Javed told the media that milk prices across most of Pakistan already exceed Rs. 200 per litre. However, she said the Sindh government wishes to maintain the current rate.
She added that a final decision regarding new milk prices has not yet been made. Meetings at the Commissioner’s Office concluded that milk quality will first be assessed before setting the final price.
Javed further stated that the Karachi Commissioner is in constant contact with dairy farmers, and a committee, comprising officials from various departments, has been formed to resolve the issue through dialogue.
