Pakistani Transgender Rights Advocate Nominated for UN Role

In a groundbreaking moment for Pakistan and global human rights advocacy, Nayyab Ali, a prominent Pakistani human rights defender and policy expert, has been shortlisted by the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) for the prestigious position of UN Special Rapporteur on the Situation of Human Rights Defenders.

Speaking to the Associated Press of Pakistan (APP) on Wednesday, Nayyab described the nomination as a powerful affirmation of the UN’s values of equality and inclusivity.

“This recognition reinforces the UN’s commitment to universality and dignity for all,” she said. “If appointed, my goal will be to strengthen protections for human rights defenders—particularly those from gender-diverse communities—who continue to face violence and marginalization worldwide.”

The next stage of the selection process will be overseen by a Special Consultative Group, comprising representatives from Malawi, the Republic of Korea, North Macedonia, Guatemala, and Türkiye. The group will submit its recommendations to the President of the Human Rights Council for a final decision during the Council’s 61st Session.

Nayyab currently serves as the Executive Director of Transgender Rights Consultants Pakistan and as a Global Human Rights Fellow at Harvard University’s Carr Center. She was a key contributor to drafting the Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Act, 2018, a landmark law in Pakistan’s journey toward gender equality.

Her advocacy and leadership have earned her seven international awards, including the Franco-German Prize for Human Rights and the Rule of Law (2020).

Nayyab’s shortlisting has been widely hailed as a historic milestone for Pakistan and a major breakthrough for transgender visibility and inclusion within the United Nations system.

This marks the first time in UN history that a transgender woman has been shortlisted for a high-level position under the UN Special Procedures mechanism, symbolizing a new era of diversity and representation in global governance.
