The Director General of the Environment Protection Department, Punjab, Dr Imran Hamid Shaikh, announced a strict crackdown on smoke-emitting vehicles starting today, directing traffic police to take immediate action against violators.
Dr Shaikh said vehicles lacking proper fitness certificates and VICS clearance will not be allowed on the roads. He also emphasized that traffic police must stop such vehicles on the spot.
As part of broader anti-smog measures, he said it is now mandatory to spray water twice daily on roads and active construction sites to reduce dust. Construction projects violating environmental regulations will face action, and trucks transporting soil or debris without proper covers will be seized.
The DG warned that strict action would be taken against those burning crop residues. He urged agricultural field teams to remain active and declared that dust and mud on roads would no longer be permitted to fuel smog.
He further directed that schoolchildren and their parents must wear masks, calling on the education department to ensure compliance. “All institutions must now move beyond lip service—fighting air pollution requires concrete steps,” he said.
