NASA Confirms Presence of Another Moon Around Earth

NASA has confirmed that Earth possesses a second, albeit temporary, natural companion — a quasi-moon identified as 2025 PN7. The discovery, made by researchers at the University of Hawaii, reveals that this celestial body has been accompanying Earth since the 1960s and is expected to remain in its current orbital pattern until approximately 2083.

Unlike the Earth’s primary moon, which was formed billions of years ago following a massive collision and maintains an orbit approximately 384,000 kilometres from the planet, 2025 PN7 is considerably smaller, measuring between 18 and 36 metres in diameter.

Rather than directly orbiting Earth, the quasi-moon travels around the sun, closely mirroring Earth’s orbital path. This synchronized movement gives the appearance of a companion object, although it maintains a significant distance of nearly 4 million kilometres from our planet — too far to exert any gravitational or tidal influence.

Astronomers have so far confirmed the existence of only eight quasi-moons within Earth’s vicinity. These objects are of particular interest to scientists, as they provide valuable insights into the movement of near-Earth asteroids and the complex gravitational dynamics of our solar system.

While not a true second moon, 2025 PN7 represents a rare and intriguing phenomenon — a transient celestial partner accompanying Earth on its long journey around the sun.
