Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has announced a monthly stipend for imams of 65,000 mosques across the province — a first-of-its-kind initiative in Punjab’s history.
Chairing a meeting on law and order in Lahore, the chief minister said imams hold a highly respected position in society and should not depend on community donations. She said the provincial government would take full responsibility for their financial well-being to ensure dignity and stability for religious leaders.
Maryam Nawaz was briefed that mosque construction and renovation projects have been added to the Annual Development Programme (ADP). She directed officials to complete these projects promptly and maintain the sanctity of mosques.
The CM also ordered road repairs leading to Raiwind before the annual Tablighi Congregation, alongside special transport and security arrangements for pilgrims. A new Cyber Crime Cell will also be set up to prevent online misuse and enforce the Loudspeaker Act.
Religious circles welcomed the stipend scheme, calling it a historic move toward promoting respect for imams and protecting mosque sanctity in Punjab.
