Umar Akmal Blames Waqar Younis for Ruining His Career

There is no love lost between Umar Akmal and Waqar Younis, and the former batter has once again taken aim at his former coach, accusing him of playing a major role in ending his international career.

Speaking on a local television talk show, Umar reflected on the highs and lows of his career, alleging that internal politics and personal grudges cost him his place in Pakistan cricket. He claimed that certain officials within the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) continue to block his return, both in domestic competitions and the Pakistan Super League (PSL).

“Some people sitting in the PCB don’t want me or Kamran [Akmal] to play again. That’s why we’re not being picked in the PSL either,” Umar said.

The 35-year-old asserted that despite being fit and available, he was deliberately excluded from domestic tournaments, making it difficult for franchises to evaluate his form or consider him for selection.

Turning his attention to Waqar Younis, Umar Akmal accused the former fast bowler of harboring personal issues with him during his coaching tenure.

“Waqar Younis ruined my career, not because of performance, but because of jealousy. He couldn’t tolerate my fame, my earnings, or my lifestyle,” Umar alleged.

He further claimed that Waqar had similar conflicts with other senior players.

“He didn’t just target me. There were others too, but I don’t want to name them right now,” Umar said. He added that he has evidence to support his claims and intends to disclose it when the time is right.

This is not the first time Umar Akmal has directed criticism at Waqar Younis. The two have a history of public disputes, with each blaming the other for their fallout. Waqar Younis coached Umar Akmal across two separate tenures spanning nearly three years, but both have been unable to reconcile their differences.

Although cricket fans may never learn the full truth, these allegations have reignited debate over how Pakistan cricket manages its talented yet polarizing players. Supporters remain divided between viewing Umar Akmal as a squandered talent or as someone unfairly sidelined.
