Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Traffic Pir Muhammad Shah has revealed that several traffic police personnel are requesting transfers following the rollout of Karachi’s automated e-challan system.
The DIG explained that after ending the manual challan issuance process and introducing camera-based ticketing, some officers who were reluctant to perform their duties are now seeking transfers to the district police. “Those who don’t want to work are asking for transfers, and we’re not stopping them,” he said.
He added that around 800 officers, who previously issued manual challans, have now been shifted to traffic regulation duties. Shah noted that these officers often faced public confrontations while issuing fines and were not properly trained for such interactions.
The DIG emphasized that only honest and dedicated officers would remain in the traffic department. He said efforts are underway to reform the traffic police, introducing measures such as pick-and-drop services, meal provisions, and performance-based incentives.
The DIG also revealed that young recruits are being brought in to energize the force and improve public service. He also confirmed that under the new e-challan camera system, traffic police officers themselves will be monitored for accountability.
