Strict Action Announced Against Men Using Pink Scooters in Sindh

The Sindh government has announced strict enforcement measures for its Pink Scooter Project, warning that any scooter found being used by male family members of beneficiaries will be immediately impounded.

Speaking to The News, Managing Director of the Sindh Mass Transit Authority (SMTA) Kanwal Nizam Bhutto said the electric scooters—distributed free of cost to female students and working women—will also be seized if operated without official registration number plates or by individuals without valid two-wheeler driving licences.

“The use of helmets is also mandatory for the safety of women riders,” she stressed.

The Pink Scooter initiative is one of the Sindh government’s flagship projects aimed at empowering women through safe and independent mobility. So far, 200 pink electric scooters have been distributed among eligible women in Karachi and other cities following a transparent selection process. The recipients also completed a week-long training course to ensure responsible riding.

Kanwal said police, traffic police, and the excise and taxation departments had been directed to impound scooters being used by unauthorized persons or driven without licence or registration. “If male members of families start using these scooters, the very purpose of women’s empowerment will be defeated,” she added.

She further noted that another 725 pink electric scooters would soon be imported to expand the program to more districts, including Hyderabad, Mirpurkhas, Sukkur, and Larkana. “We are committed to enforcing the law and ensuring this initiative continues to empower women across Sindh,” she concluded.
