Faisalabad’s long wait for international cricket is finally over. The iconic Iqbal Cricket Stadium came alive once again as Pakistan faced South Africa in the first ODI of a three-match series, marking the city’s first taste of international action in nearly two decades.
Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Mohsin Naqvi celebrated the occasion on social media, calling it a proud day for both the people of Faisalabad and Pakistan cricket.
“After 17 long years, international cricket finally returns to Faisalabad,” Naqvi wrote on X.
“Delighted to see the excitement as Pakistan and South Africa begin the ODI series here in Pakistan’s own ‘Manchester’. The passion of Faisalabad’s people for cricket is truly unmatched,” he added.
In encouraging news for the city, the PCB chairman all but confirmed that Iqbal Stadium will become a regular venue for the national team’s international fixtures in the coming months.
“Insha’Allah, Faisalabad will continue to host international matches in the future,” Naqvi stated.

Cricket’s return carries deep significance for Faisalabad. The city last hosted an ODI on April 11, 2008, when Pakistan defeated Bangladesh by seven wickets. Seventeen years later, it has once again become a focal point of the nation’s cricketing calendar.
Today’s match is only the 17th ODI to be held at Iqbal Stadium, but judging by the packed crowd, Faisalabad’s cricket enthusiasts can expect more action in the future.
The venue has previously hosted three ODIs between Pakistan and South Africa, with the home side winning twice and the visitors once.
Cricket fever has officially returned to Faisalabad—and for its passionate fans, the comeback feels every bit worth the 17-year wait.
