Huawei’s AR/VR Headset Could Replace Controllers With a Finger Ring

Huawei may be developing a new type of AR/VR headset, according to a recent patent application that outlines a wearable device featuring a detachable ring-style controller integrated into the strap.

The design includes a removable strap that doubles as a finger-worn ring. When detached, the ring can be used to interact with the user interface through gestures, pointing, and navigation. The patent describes support for motion-based input, allowing users to control the headset without a separate handheld device.

When the ring is docked back into the headset, it can still perform basic actions like tapping and swiping. It also recharges automatically while attached, offering a seamless user experience without the need for additional controllers.

The system appears to be Huawei’s attempt at simplifying input for extended reality devices by removing the need for external controllers. While the concept is intriguing on paper, it’s unclear how well such a system would function in real-world use.

It’s important to note that this is only a patent application. While it shows Huawei has invested time in exploring this idea, there’s no guarantee the device will move forward to production or become a commercial product.

Huawei has not made any official announcements regarding the development of AR/VR hardware featuring this technology.
