Islamabad Announces New Mandatory Requirement for All Vehicles

In a major step toward controlling smog and improving air quality, Islamabad authorities have decided to make carbon emission testing for all vehicles mandatory through certified laboratories.

The decision aims to curb pollution in the federal capital by regulating vehicular emissions, while also shifting brick kilns and industries to modern, eco-friendly technologies. Additionally, officials have imposed a complete ban on open burning of garbage, with strict legal action planned against violators.

These measures were approved during a meeting chaired by CDA Chairman and Islamabad Chief Commissioner Muhammad Ali Randhawa on Tuesday at the CDA Headquarters.  Chairman Randhawa directed all departments to implement a comprehensive strategy with strict adherence to standard operating procedures (SOPs).

Officials informed the meeting that several steps have already been taken to reduce emissions from vehicles, brick kilns, and industries. Brick kilns violating environmental laws and refusing to adopt cleaner technology are being demolished under existing regulations.

Randhawa instructed authorities to ensure all kilns and industries switch to modern, environment-friendly systems. He also ordered strict enforcement of the ban on garbage burning and directed regular water sprinkling at construction sites to control dust pollution.

Environmental expert Rizwan Mehmood suggested prioritizing tree species that help absorb pollutants and enhance air quality. He also called for community awareness campaigns and encouraged carpooling to further reduce vehicular emissions.
