After Maps, Google Gemini is Now Coming to Android Auto

Google has begun a limited rollout of its Gemini AI assistant on Android Auto, nearly six months after announcing its arrival for in-car systems. The integration marks a significant step in Google’s push to embed Gemini across its ecosystem.

According to 9to5Google, some users on Android Auto versions 15.6 and 15.7 have reported early access to Gemini, though the rollout appears to be server-side and not linked to a specific app version or phone. Currently, access is limited to those enrolled in the Android Auto beta program.

Early adopters have noticed new Gemini-related options in Android Auto settings, including a toggle to allow the assistant to access precise location. This move suggests Google is preparing to make Gemini a full replacement for Google Assistant within Android Auto.

Once fully deployed, Gemini is expected to offer enhanced natural language understanding and streamlined app integration. It will support tasks like messaging, music control, and smart home commands through extensions to apps such as Google Maps, Google Home, and Keep.

Gemini can also translate both outgoing and incoming messages in real time, a feature Google previously demonstrated. The assistant’s voice capabilities will be accessible via two hotwords: the familiar “Hey Google” and the new “Let’s talk” trigger for activating Gemini Live.

Unlike the version on smartphones and speakers, Gemini on Android Auto delivers brief responses to minimize distractions and support safer driving.

The rollout is currently limited, but wider availability is expected in the coming weeks, depending on user feedback.
