Ireland Pushes UEFA to Suspend Israel from Competitions

Irish football is set to take center stage in sports politics this weekend, as the Football Association of Ireland (FAI) prepares to vote on whether to formally request UEFA to suspend Israel from all European competitions.

The decision, scheduled for today, has drawn global attention amid the genocide in Gaza and mounting calls from sporting bodies to suspend Israel.

The resolution, proposed by Bohemian FC and backed by several clubs, accuses the Israel Football Association (IFA) of breaching two key UEFA statutes:

  • First allegation: Organising clubs in occupied Palestinian territories without the consent of the Palestinian Football Association.
  • Second allegation: Failing to implement and enforce an effective anti-racism policy.

If passed, the motion would also urge UEFA to establish transparent criteria for suspending or excluding member associations — a move that could set a precedent for future disciplinary actions.

This is not the first time Israel’s participation in football has come under scrutiny. Last month, UEFA considered holding a vote on Israel’s suspension but backed away after a U.S.-brokered ceasefire on October 10.

In September, UN experts called for Israel’s suspension from international football, citing findings from a Commission of Inquiry report that accused Israel of committing genocide in Gaza.

The football bodies of Turkey and Norway also publicly supported Israel’s exclusion from international competition, despite FIFA’s silence on the matter.

Ireland’s government has been one of the most outspoken critics of Israel’s actions in Gaza within the European Union. Dublin officially recognised a Palestinian state last year and has sought to restrict trade with Israeli settlements in occupied territories.

If Ireland’s motion to seek Israel’s ban gains traction, UEFA could face one of its most controversial decisions in recent history — one that may redefine the boundaries of football governance and political responsibility.
