Sugar prices have surged to Rs. 229 per kg in parts of the country, with Quetta posting the highest rate, according to new data from the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics.
Sugar in Quetta became Rs. 19 per kg costlier within a week, rising from Rs. 210 to Rs. 229, making it the most expensive in Pakistan.
In Peshawar, the maximum retail price has reached Rs. 200 per kilo, while consumers in Karachi and Islamabad are paying up to Rs. 195 per kilo.
In Rawalpindi, the top rate stands at Rs. 190 per kilo. Despite steep prices in some cities, the national average recorded a small weekly decline of Rs. 2.01, falling to Rs. 185.47 per kilo from Rs. 187.48 a week earlier.
Even so, sugar is significantly costlier than last year. During the same period in 2024, its average nationwide price was Rs. 132.24 per kilo, reflecting a sharp year-on-year increase.
