OpenAI is launching a new version of its AI assistant designed specifically for K-12 teachers. The service, called ChatGPT for Teachers, is built for classroom use and will be free for verified school employees until June 2027.
The move comes at a time when many students already rely on ChatGPT to complete homework, and now OpenAI wants teachers to use the technology for their own work as well.
OpenAI describes ChatGPT for Teachers as a tool that can help educators prepare assignments, create lesson plans, and produce classroom materials. The company says the goal is to let teachers explore AI at their own pace and in a controlled environment. This version includes the same features available in the consumer version of ChatGPT, such as unlimited messages with GPT-5.1 Auto, support for app connectors, file uploads, image generation, and memory tools.
What separates this edition from the consumer version is its compliance with the Family Education Rights Act, which sets strict rules for handling student data. OpenAI has also focused on collaboration features. Teachers can share chats with colleagues, and new conversations will open with suggestions based on how other educators have used the assistant.
Before targeting teachers directly, OpenAI introduced ChatGPT Edu, a system that allows schools and universities to give students institutional access in the same way they provide email accounts. The company also released Study Mode, a feature available to all users that helps explain answers step by step.
OpenAI is not the only company trying to gain ground in schools. Google, for example, has been offering discounts on its Gemini tools to attract more students. OpenAI now hopes that by appealing to teachers, it can strengthen its position in the education sector and encourage broader adoption of its AI models.
