Pakistan’s emerging spinner Usman Tariq has quickly made a name for himself in the international arena, but his rise may not have been possible without a former Australian cricketer who guided him through a difficult phase in his career.
Despite building a reputation in the franchise circuit, the 27-year-old had to wait for his chance to wear the Pakistan green. This was partly due to the team’s strong spin reserves and partly because of questions surrounding his unique action. During those times, Usman said Shane Watson offered crucial support to help him keep going.
Speaking about the period when he was suspended from bowling due to his style, Usman explained that Watson refused to let him feel abandoned. He said the Australian great not only kept checking on him but even offered financial help so he could travel to Dubai for correction work.
“When my action was suspended, Shane Watson stood by me throughout,” Usman revealed. “He kept telling me not to worry and said he would even cover my expenses if I needed to go to Dubai.”
Usman Tariq has already endured several suspensions resulting from his bowling action. His most recent came during PSL 10, when he had to sit out matches for Quetta Gladiators. Watson, who coached Quetta during PSL 9 when Usman was part of the squad, consistently stood by the spinner during those trying times. For Usman, that support served as motivation to push harder. He has now received clearance on his bowling style and looks set to become a mainstay in Pakistan’s cricketing setup.
As Pakistan continues to develop its next crop of spinners, stories like this underline the importance of guidance, belief, and strong backing, even from unlikely sources, especially when the spotlight turns harsh.
