The Islamabad Transport Authority has launched a major crackdown on smoke-emitting vehicles as part of efforts to maintain a healthier Air Quality Index (AQI) in the federal capital.
Officials say growing air pollution in the city has raised serious concerns, prompting strict enforcement measures across major routes. Inspection checkpoints were set up at multiple locations, where teams examined vehicles for emissions and roadworthiness.
During the past 24 hours, a total of 63 vehicles were inspected, out of which 23 were fined, while 9 were impounded and shifted to local police stations for further action.
According to officials, a Vehicular Emission Clearance Certificate has now been declared mandatory for all drivers. Authorities say no vehicle will be allowed to operate on city roads without this certificate, which is aimed at ensuring strict monitoring of emission standards.
According to Chairman Irfan Memon, smoke-emitting vehicles cannot be allowed on the roads under any circumstances due to their harmful environmental impact. He has directed staff to submit daily reports to ensure complete transparency and continuity of the crackdown.
The Transport Authority has reiterated that daily operations will be conducted without any discrimination, stressing that improving air quality and curbing vehicular pollution remain key priorities for city administration.

Jhooot jhoot
Trucks bikes loader bikes busses taxis all are everywhere in Islamabad and all are high emission vehicles
Only this is done to public using their own cars despite the fact that modern cars don’t have high emissions due to technology
AQI in Islamabad is not only affected by smoke emitting government vehicles….but also by the ongoing infrastructure projects: bridges, underpasses etc
So cracking down on hopeless and hapless citizens will do nothing but partially satisfy the never ending ego of the form 47 government
What about Form 47 cricketer?
Jaali govt k dhakoslay. Just to earn some more in terms of fine money. Itni aqal hoti to pakistan mein EV vehicles ka manufacturing plant laatay apne apne tenures mein. Ghaday
My humble request to the authorities:
Please introduce an online appointment system for vehicle owners. It is very difficult to leave all our work and stand in long queues without any certainty of getting our turn.
I personally visited three times:
The first time, the queue was extremely long.
The second and third times, D-Chowk was completely blocked by the authorities, making it impossible to reach the office.
An online appointment system would save people’s time, reduce crowding, and make the process much more efficient.
Can you please point out exact place on D chowk? I visited 2 time but failed to find the point . Thank you
All government school college busses, road carpeting machinery, bulldozers, Excavators, grass cutting tractors, every other police car, prison vans, trucks, transporter busses and vans etc are smog emitting monster machines but only citizens being targeted to keep them oppressed at every level.
So true. The police vehicle was emitting black smoke.
These people that take vehicles to the police station is opening logistical problems. Opening door for bribes.
Absolutely right
You write chairman but you don’t mention chairman of what.
You dont link to where can do emission testing either.
When you have no useful and constructive work to do, you do such stupid things only to torture the public so that their attention is not diverted to the real issues. First M-Tag, now Emissions. If the hell these things are so important, clearly give the public a few months and create many centres so that the people do not have to line up.
Good initiative, but what about all morning swipers that lid fire after collecting all leaves and waste. One can see any street and road One of the biggest reason for pollution and nobody doing anything.???
First you made it mandatory, for all vehicles to have a special sticker, in Islamabad. Then better sense prevailed, and the M Tag, for the Motorways was agreed as “the sticker”. Then anyone who has not paid updated token tax, cannot get the M Tag. That too, is a issue, as too much rush at Excise Department. Adding insult to injury, emission certification. Everyday, all school college buses emitting thick smoke. So if those are stopped, the children will suffer. Better sense, wait until the school holidays, then enforce. And by the way, is there a further extension to the Income Tax Filing Date.

Kindly confirm where do I get the certificate for Azad Kashmir registered vehicle.
As I visited D Chowk and they said that AJK registered vehicles are not entertained there and AJK vehicle’s data is not in their system.
Kindly guide from where do I get emission testing for AJK registered vehicle ?
Good job, we stand with you and appreciate it!

They should start installing Smog Towers across the major cities and urban centers like blue area. That has a higher chance of making an impact. There are a few companies making these indigenous Smog Towers like https://3pol.com
In first stage they should make it mandatory for all sorts of commercial vehicles. Also, service points need to be increased to facilitate public to get their vehicles tested.
