South Africa delivered a historic blow to India on home soil, crushing the hosts 2–0 in the Test series and sealing their first Test triumph in India in 25 years, a victory made even sweeter after the controversy that shadowed the opening match.
In the first Test, Indian pacer Jasprit Bumrah was caught on the stump mic using a derogatory term mocking South African captain Temba Bavuma’s height. Although Bumrah was fined and made a show of reconciliation after the match, the insult clearly lingered.
Bavuma and his team responded not with words but with a level of dominance that left India humiliated in their own backyard.
The second Test, played in India’s newest Test venue and in front of largely empty stands, turned into a showcase of South African excellence and Indian collapse. The visitors secured a 408-run victory, the heaviest defeat India has ever suffered in Test cricket.
South Africa’s spinners and seamers produced a masterclass. Simon Harmer, once sidelined after a rough tour of India in 2015, returned as the series’ standout performer. His 17 wickets at an astonishing average of 8.94 now stand as the best figures by any bowler in a Test series in India.
Not far behind, Marco Jansen claimed 12 wickets at 10.08, and capped the series with a moment that fans will replay for years: a stunning over-the-shoulder, one-handed diving catch while sprinting backward.
The series also cemented Temba Bavuma as one of the most quietly successful Test captains of the modern era. With this win, Bavuma now holds the record for most Test wins as captain without a defeat (11 wins in 12 matches). He surpassed the previous best held jointly with Mike Brearley, who had 10 wins from 15 matches.
When Bavuma walked off after sealing the whitewash, he was greeted with a long, emotional hug from head coach Shukri Conrad.
