Netflix has disabled the ability to cast video from its mobile app to most modern TVs and streaming devices, including the Google TV Streamer and newer Chromecast models with remotes. The change applies to all subscription plans and was introduced without prior notice.
Netflix says casting is still supported on older Chromecast units that do not come with a remote. These older devices remain compatible, while newer hardware that includes built-in navigation controls can no longer receive content cast from the Netflix mobile app.
The update means users must now open the Netflix app directly on their smart TV or streaming device and use the physical remote instead of casting from a phone or tablet.
Many users discovered the change when the Cast icon suddenly disappeared from their Netflix app. Reports show this issue affects nearly all modern devices capable of running the Netflix app, regardless of subscription tier.
Some users have expressed confusion, especially those who rely on casting when traveling or when using devices without dedicated streaming interfaces.
Netflix has not offered a detailed explanation for the decision. The company has only stated that the change is intended to “improve the customer experience,” a message many users see as unclear, given the sudden loss of a widely used feature.
This update also applies to paid plans, meaning even premium subscribers can no longer cast to affected devices.
