The Punjab government has finalised a new law aimed at cleansing the province of illegal weapons, introducing strict penalties and enhanced scrutiny for firearm holders.
According to officials, the draft of the Punjab Surrender of Illegal Arms Act 2025 has been completed.
The proposed legislation offers citizens a 15-day amnesty, during which anyone possessing illegal weapons can surrender them without fear of legal action.
Weapons may be deposited at the nearest police station or at CCD centres.
Authorities will issue a receipt for every surrendered weapon and maintain a digital record of all entries. Once the grace period ends, the government will take strict action against anyone found in possession of illegal arms.
The draft law also includes a detailed review of licensed weapons. Individuals involved in serious criminal cases or tax defaulters may have their firearm licences cancelled. Licences may also be revoked immediately if the holder fails to justify the need for keeping a weapon.
Officials say that once the legislation is passed, a province-wide operation will begin to recover illegal arms and strengthen public safety.
