Punjab University Buses Seized for Emitting Excessive Smoke

The Punjab Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has banned Punjab University buses that emitted excessive smoke during routine inspections in Lahore.

Inspection teams stopped multiple university buses on Canal Road and found them releasing thick emissions that contributed to the city’s worsening air pollution.

Officials examined the vehicles and discovered that they lacked the mandatory environmental fitness certificates required for operation.

The EPA seized the buses on the spot and initiated legal proceedings under the Environmental Protection Act. The agency confirmed that this action forms part of a wider crackdown targeting smoke-emitting vehicles operated by universities, colleges, schools, and hospitals.

The crackdown aims to restrict unfit and poorly maintained vehicles that officials identify as major contributors to deteriorating air quality. With Lahore and several other cities in Punjab facing severe smog, the provincial government has intensified environmental enforcement.

Officials identified aging buses and heavy vehicles as significant sources of emissions. The EPA has deployed monitoring teams across the province to stop unfit vehicles from entering public roads.

The agency warned that it will impose strict penalties on institutions that continue to operate non-compliant vehicles. Authorities emphasized that reducing vehicular pollution remains essential for protecting public health and improving overall air quality in Punjab.
