The Lahore High Court has directed authorities to conduct strict inspections of all heavy vehicles, including those operated by the police, to ensure full compliance with environmental standards. Justice Shahid Karim issued the detailed order while hearing petitions related to smog control across Punjab.
The court instructed the Environment Department to submit a report on the mechanical fitness of vehicles and to take firm enforcement measures against violators. It also ordered departments involved in anti-smog efforts to file comprehensive progress reports.
The order further required updates on the installation of water treatment plants at sugar mills. Officials informed the court that six mills have completed the installation process.
Addressing concerns about Lahore’s green spaces, the court prohibited the cutting of trees during construction at Nasir Bagh. The Parks and Horticulture Authority reported that it had transplanted 123 trees, all of which remain safe, tagged, and maintained. The court directed the authority to develop a clear policy on tree relocation.
Justice Karim also ordered WASA to issue water-charge notices strictly under relevant rules. The Judicial Water Commission told the court that a meeting had been held to propose a detailed traffic management plan, while the chief traffic officer will improve coordination with the Lahore Transport Company. The EPA was asked to provide a more detailed compliance report.
