The Punjab Police and the National Highways & Motorway Police (NH&MP) have finalised a security cooperation agreement that will allow the Punjab Police to begin patrolling the motorways alongside NH&MP personnel.
Punjab IGP Dr Usman Anwar and NH&MP Additional IG Saad Akhtar Bharwana signed the memorandum of understanding (MoU) at the Central Police Office on Thursday.
Senior officials, including DIG (R&D) Fawaduddin Qureshi, Motorways Central Zone DIG Imran Shahid, and AIG (Admin & Security) Dr Asad Ijaz Malhi, attended the ceremony.
A Punjab Police spokesperson said that joint safety operations and a dedicated hotline between both forces have already been activated.
Joint checks of public service vehicles at designated motorway points began late Thursday night, during which data on drivers, conductors, and helpers are being collected. Unverified staff will be barred from entering the motorway.
IGP Dr Anwar said real-time intelligence sharing is now in place to curb terrorism, smuggling, and the movement of stolen vehicles.
He added that both forces will enhance security through coordinated highway monitoring, data sharing, and the use of modern technology.
He said immediate alerts will be issued for suspicious individuals travelling on national highways, while a joint traffic management plan will remain active during foggy weather and holiday seasons.
The MoU also states that Punjab Police and NH&MP will conduct joint rescue and relief operations during natural disasters or major accidents under a unified system
