Punjab Starts Using AI to Identify Vehicles With Fake Number Plates

The Punjab Safe City Authority has introduced an automated artificial intelligence (AI)–based system to identify fake, tampered, and cloned vehicle number plates across the province.

According to the officials, the newly deployed AI system can instantly detect illegal changes in number plates, including fake plates, modified registrations, or cloned numbers copied from other vehicles.

With this system in place, the use of fraudulent number plates can no longer go unnoticed.

If a vehicle is found using a fake or tampered number plate, Safe City surveillance cameras will immediately identify the violation. Once detected, the system will automatically generate an alert, which will then be forwarded to the Safe City Virtual Patrolling Officer.

Upon receiving the alert, the Virtual Patrolling Officer will dispatch the relevant field force to the location. The field team will then reach the spot and take immediate legal action against the offender.

Authorities have issued a strict warning, stating that no leniency will be shown to individuals involved in such violations.

Offenders will not only face traffic challans but will also be charged under serious criminal laws for fraud, forgery and the use of false documents.

Cases will be registered under sections 420, 468, 471 and 171, as any illegal alteration or misuse of vehicle number plates is considered a serious criminal offence.

Officials have advised citizens to ensure that only original and legally issued number plates are installed on their vehicles.
