Sindh Announces Another Holiday for Christian Community

The Sindh government on Wednesday announced an additional public holiday on December 26 (Boxing Day) for members of the Christian community, a move welcomed by minority groups across the province.

According to a notification issued by the Department of Services, General Administration and Coordination, the holiday will apply to Christians working in government, autonomous and semi-autonomous bodies, corporations, and local councils operating under the provincial government.

The notification clarified that employees engaged in essential services will not be entitled to avail the holiday.

Separately, the provincial government has already declared December 25 a public holiday, which marks both Christmas Day and the birth anniversary of Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah, the founder of Pakistan.

Meanwhile, Christmas celebrations have begun across the country, with various events highlighting interfaith harmony and inclusion.

Earlier this week, Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice Yahya Afridi, along with judges of the Supreme Court and the president of the Supreme Court Bar Association, joined Christian employees and security staff in a Christmas celebration held at the Supreme Court building.

The ceremony, which included a cake-cutting event, was attended by members of the Christian community working at the apex court and was marked by an atmosphere of unity and mutual respect.

Addressing the gathering, the chief justice emphasised the importance of interfaith harmony and reaffirmed the judiciary’s commitment to constitutional values, including equality, religious freedom, and human dignity.

He extended warm Christmas greetings to Christian staff and acknowledged their contributions, praising their dedication and service to the justice system.
