The 2026 edition of the Pakistan Super League (PSL 11) will stick with a player draft instead of shifting to an auction model, despite strong lobbying from some franchises.
According to sources familiar with the discussions, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has decided that PSL 11 will once again use a draft system to build local and foreign squads. Teams had pushed for an IPL-style auction, arguing it would create more excitement, allow flexible spending, and help them aggressively go after top international talent.
However, the board is not completely shutting the door on franchise demands. Officials are exploring a proposal that would allow limited direct signings in addition to the draft.
Under this model, each franchise could be allowed to sign a small number of players outside the main draft window, subject to salary caps and category rules. The idea is to give teams some room to secure marquee names while retaining the cost control and competitive balance that the draft format provides.
The draft has been a core feature of the league since its launch and has helped smaller-market teams stay competitive against bigger, more commercially powerful franchises. PCB officials believe that shifting fully to an auction without proper safeguards could widen the financial gap between teams and distort the talent pool.
PSL 11 is already shaping up to be a landmark season. The PCB has confirmed that the league will expand to eight teams, with two new franchises set to be auctioned in Islamabad in early January.
The foreign player registration window for PSL 11 / PSL 2026 is also open, giving international cricketers more roster spots and earning opportunities in the upcoming season.
