Punjab Announces Heavy Fines and Jail-Time for Littering

The Punjab government has finalized preparations for a province-wide crackdown on littering, with strict punishments set to take effect from January 1.

Officials have announced a zero-tolerance policy for burning or dumping garbage in public spaces. Under the new enforcement regime, violators will face heavy fines and prison sentences.

Burning garbage will result in a fine of up to Rs. 500,000 and imprisonment of up to three years. Penalties for burning tires are even stricter, carrying a fine of Rs. 500,000 and jail terms of up to seven years.

The overall punishment framework allows fines ranging from Rs. 50,000 to Rs. 500,000, along with imprisonment between three and seven years, depending on the nature of the violation.

The government has also specified fines for different forms of littering. Throwing garbage outside homes, shops, or factories will attract a fine of Rs. 25,000. Dumping waste into the street or neighborhood drains will result in a Rs. 10,000 fine, while throwing animal waste or remains will carry a penalty of Rs. 50,000.

To ensure enforcement, the Punjab Authority for Suthra Punjab has formed dedicated monitoring teams. These teams will oversee streets, residential areas, commercial zones, and industrial areas to ensure compliance with the new rules.

Provincial authorities described the initiative as a major cleanliness drive and stressed that strict action will be taken against anyone found burning garbage or dumping waste in public spaces.

The government has urged citizens to cooperate with authorities and follow proper waste disposal practices to avoid penalties and help improve environmental conditions across Punjab.

  • Send the CM Sindh and his entire corrupted team to Punjab for learning how not to eat up money and how the resource of Pakistan can be utilised.

  • I think it’s excellent. But in my opinion, in initial stages penalties should be less. Then stage wise according to response could be raised.
