An explosive device detonated under a moving car in Moscow on Monday, killing a senior Russian army officer in what authorities are treating as a targeted attack.
According to Russian reports, Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov died on Monday morning when an explosive device detonated under his vehicle in the south of Moscow. The blast destroyed the car and fatally injured the general.
Russia’s Investigative Committee confirmed that Sarvarov was serving as the head of the Operational Training Department of the Russian Armed Forces, a key post responsible for high-level military preparation and exercises.
Russian outlets have suggested that Ukrainian special forces may have been behind the attack, framing it as a targeted assassination linked to the ongoing conflict. However, Ukrainian authorities have not issued any statement on the incident so far.
Investigators and forensic teams have been dispatched to the blast site as Russian authorities open a formal probe into the killing, which took place in the southern part of the capital.
The attack adds to a growing list of explosions and car bombings targeting senior Russian military figures since the start of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
Earlier this year, another high-ranking general was also reported killed in a similar blast near Moscow.
