First Comprehensive Online Balochi Dictionary ‘Labzganj’ Launched

The first-ever comprehensive online dictionary for the Balochi language, titled ‘Labzganj’, has been officially launched and is now available to the public, marking a major milestone in Balochi linguistic development.

Developed by the Balochi Academy Quetta under its Natural Language Processing (NLP) initiative, Labzganj is the most extensive digital lexical resource ever created for Balochi.

The dictionary contains more than 40,000 words, each with meanings and equivalents in Balochi, English, Urdu, and Brahvi, making it a valuable tool for students, researchers, linguists, translators, and language learners worldwide.

Speaking at the launch ceremony, Habitan Umar, Chairman of the Balochi Academy and Coordinator of the NLP Balochi Project, said the initiative builds on decades of scholarly work.

He cited earlier publications such as Balochi Labzbalad by Jan Muhammad Dashti, as well as dictionary contributions by Dr Naseer Dashti and Panah Baloch, whose efforts laid the foundation for modern Balochi lexicography.

Linguists and academics have welcomed Labzganj as a critical step toward preserving and standardising the Balochi language, which has largely relied on oral traditions and limited written records.

The digital platform is expected to strengthen language documentation and promote wider learning and research in the digital era.
