Lahore Announces Kites Sale Date for Basant 2026

The government has allowed the manufacture of kites and string from December 30 in preparation for Basant 2026, while the sale of kite-flying materials will be permitted only from February 1 to February 8 under strict safety measures.

Deputy Commissioner Lahore Syed Musa Raza issued an official notification permitting Basant celebrations on February 6, 7, and 8 within Lahore’s district limits, with kite flying allowed under regulated conditions. The move aims to prevent accidents and protect lives during the festival.

Authorities have activated the e-Biz app and an online portal for the digital registration of kite and string manufacturers and sellers.

The making and sale of spools, known as charkhis, is completely banned, and only kite string in the form of a “pana” is allowed. Use of nylon, plastic, or metallic-coated strings is strictly prohibited, and a zero-tolerance policy will be enforced.

Safety measures include mandatory installation of protective wires on motorcycles to prevent injuries from stray strings.

Kite sizes are restricted, and violations will result in legal action. Police and district officials have been instructed to crack down on banned materials and unsafe kite practices.

Deputy Commissioner Raza emphasized that Basant is a cultural festival, and ensuring its safety is the administration’s responsibility.

He urged parents to prevent children from using prohibited strings and assured that law-abiding citizens would be fully protected.

Traditional kites of Lahore include a variety of shapes and styles, such as Gudda, Guddi, Patang, Kup, Pari, Lucknow Kat, Tukkal, Do-Akhal, Lepo, Rocket, Parphara, Teerah, Machhar, Silai Marka, Dabbidar, and Pappardan.

Kites are crafted with intricate designs and vibrant paper panels, reflecting the city’s rich cultural heritage.

With strict regulations and safety measures, Basant 2026 in Lahore promises to be a safer and culturally vibrant celebration for kite enthusiasts.
