Pakistan Railways Considers Revival of Major Train

Pakistan Railways is preparing proposals to revive the Shehsawar passenger train and to review the departure and arrival times of several trains operating on the Lahore–Narowal–Sialkot route.

Officials said the proposals follow growing demand from passengers who regularly travel on this section because of low fares and a safer, more comfortable journey compared with road transport.

Passenger numbers have increased due to population growth and continued reliance on rail services.

Currently, Pakistan Railways operates several trains on the route, including the Narowal Passenger, Faiz Ahmad Faiz Passenger, Lasani Express, Sialkot Express, and Allama Iqbal Express.

Despite these services, passengers have reported overcrowding and have asked authorities to restore the Shehsawar Passenger Train, which Pakistan Railways suspended in 2008.

Passenger representatives said reviving the Shehsawar train would ease congestion and help increase railway revenue. They also proposed changes to train schedules to improve ridership. Passengers have suggested shifting the Sialkot Express departure time from 5 a.m. to 7:15 a.m. because the early timing has reduced passenger numbers.

They also recommended adjusting the Narowal Passenger departure time to 9:20 a.m. due to frequent delays.

Another proposal suggests using the Faiz Ahmad Faiz Passenger train’s rake, which remains idle at Lahore for several hours, for an additional Shehsawar service if authorities approve its revival.

Officials said the railway minister has directed Pakistan Railways to review the proposals.
