Karachi is likely to experience a sharp drop in temperatures between January 4 and 5, with the mercury possibly falling to single digits, the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) said on Wednesday.
PMD Deputy Director Anjum Nazeer said a series of western weather systems has affected Pakistan since December 29, bringing light rainfall to several parts of Karachi.
He added that the highest rainfall of six millimetres was recorded in the Kemari area, while rain activity in the city has now largely subsided.
According to the PMD, the western system will move eastward in the coming hours, allowing cold Siberian winds to dominate the region. This change is expected to intensify cold conditions in Karachi over the weekend.
Meanwhile, the PMD forecast rain with wind and thunderstorms, along with snowfall in hilly areas, in northern Balochistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan, Kashmir, Islamabad, and parts of Punjab during the next 12 hours.
The department also warned that patchy fog may persist over northeast and south Punjab and upper Sindh during morning and night hours, while cold and cloudy weather is likely to prevail in other regions.
Temperatures recorded on Wednesday morning included Islamabad and Muzaffarabad at 8°C, Lahore 9°C, Karachi 20°C, Peshawar 10°C, Quetta 3°C, Gilgit 6°C, and Murree 4°C.
