Enzo Maresca’s reign at Chelsea is over. The Italian coach has been removed from his position after a turbulent spell at Stamford Bridge, with the club and manager agreeing to part ways with immediate effect.
An official announcement from Chelsea is expected shortly, but the decision has already been taken following growing tension over the past 24 to 48 hours. Attention at the club now turns to appointing a new head coach, with the recruitment process set to begin right away.
Maresca’s departure comes at the end of a fractious period behind the scenes. His failure to attend the post‑match press conference after a chaotic 2-2 draw with Bournemouth on Tuesday was widely viewed as another indication that his position had become strained. The club publicly cited illness, but the episode only added to speculation about a breakdown in relations.
The 44-year-old had already made headlines in mid-December when he openly suggested that “many people” inside the club were not fully behind him or the squad. He later described the build-up to a 2-0 win over Everton as “the worst 48 hours” he had experienced since arriving in west London, hinting at deep-rooted tensions off the pitch.
Results over the festive period did little to ease the pressure. Flat, uninspired displays at Stamford Bridge against Aston Villa and Bournemouth further damaged confidence in his tenure and intensified scrutiny of his methods and selections.
It marks a sharp fall from the high point of his time in charge. In November, Chelsea’s 3-0 victory over Barcelona had fueled optimism that Maresca was turning the club into genuine contenders again, with the team just three points off the top of the league at that stage.
However, subsequent damaging defeats to Leeds, Atalanta and Villa, combined with what insiders viewed as self-inflicted problems and questionable tactical decisions, eroded the early momentum.
Maresca arrived at Chelsea in the summer of 2024 on a five-year contract, with an option for the club to extend the deal by a further year.
During his spell, Chelsea lifted the Europa Conference League and the Club World Cup in 2025 and secured a return to the Champions League, achievements that initially appeared to strengthen his position.
But the relationship between coach, squad, and hierarchy has “reached the point of no return,” according to those close to the situation, leading to Thursday’s decision to bring his time at the club to an abrupt end.
Chelsea’s owners and sporting department will now move quickly to identify Maresca’s successor, with the club once again at a crossroads as they look for a manager capable of stabilising performances on the pitch and restoring unity off it.
