Major Road Expansion Project in Rawalpindi Delayed

The Punjab government has dropped the Murree Road expansion project from Liaquat Bagh to Chandni Chowk from the ongoing fiscal year 2025–26, citing the unavailability of funds, while several other major public welfare projects in Rawalpindi have also been shelved.

Authorities have confirmed that no funding will be released for the Murree Road project until at least August 31, 2026. Murree Road last underwent carpeting in 2014, and severe traffic congestion continues along the stretch from Liaquat Bagh to Chandni Chowk for most of the day.

Officials had proposed widening both sides of the road by 20 feet, acquiring land, and constructing 15-foot-wide service roads at an estimated cost of Rs. 9 billion. Financial constraints forced the government to defer the plan to fiscal year 2026–27, with costs expected to increase further.

In addition to Murree Road, authorities have also dropped three other major projects from the current fiscal year. These include the Leh Nullah Expressway and the sewerage tunnel and sewerage water treatment plant.

Authorities have also terminated a project to fence both sides of Lai Nullah to prevent dumping of waste and construction material. Work on Lai Nullah has remained stalled since 2007, and the project’s estimated cost has risen from Rs. 17 billion to nearly Rs. 100 billion.
