Google has started rolling out three AI-powered Gmail features to free Google account holders. As of today, Help Me Write, Suggested Replies, and AI-generated summaries are no longer limited to paid Google One plans such as AI Pro or Ultra.
The Help Me Write feature allows users to draft emails using short text prompts. It can also proofread and refine messages that users have already written. While similar tools exist on smartphones through on-device AI, such as Apple Intelligence or Galaxy AI, the feature adds value for users who rely on Gmail through the web.
Gmail’s AI-generated summaries offer brief overviews of lengthy or cluttered email conversations. These summaries appear at the top of an email thread in an AI overview card, allowing users to understand the context without scrolling through multiple messages.
The Personalized Suggested Replies feature creates draft responses based on a user’s writing style. To do this, Gmail analyzes previous emails to match tone and phrasing. For users comfortable with that level of analysis, the feature can significantly speed up routine replies.
Together, these features aim to reduce the time users spend reading, writing, and catching up on emails. Google is positioning Gmail as a more proactive assistant rather than a passive inbox, taking on part of the mental workload involved in daily communication.
The features target a wide range of users, from students to professionals and executives handling large volumes of email. For now, they are available only to personal Google account holders in the United States, with a wider rollout expected later.
