Textbook Prices Likely to Increase by Up to 50%

Textbooks are expected to become significantly more expensive in the coming months following a steep increase in No Objection Certificate (NOC) and license renewal fees.

Publishers have raised serious concerns over the revised regulatory charges, warning that they may be forced to increase book prices, particularly textbooks produced for private schools.

Industry sources estimate that textbook prices could rise by 40 to 50 per cent if the new fees remain in effect.

Publishers stated that it would be impossible to keep prices unchanged after the sharp increase in costs.

The NOC license fee for books has reportedly been raised from Rs. 20,000 to Rs. 150,000, while the licence renewal fee has increased from Rs. 5,000 to Rs. 75,000.

Industry representatives warned that the additional financial burden would ultimately be transferred to consumers, with students and parents being the most affected.

They urged the authorities to reconsider the decision, cautioning that higher textbook prices would further strain household budgets and negatively impact access to education.
